Mexico started the expanded World Cup with a 2-0 win against nine-man South Africa at Estadio Azteca, Azteca setting the tone for the tournament.
Julian Quinones netted the tournament’s first goal on Thursday, with Raul Jimenez sealing it later. a smooth start to the co-hosts’ Group A qualification push.
South Africa never threatened the party on opening day, ending the game with nine men after red cards to Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane.
The red, green and white smoke from Mexico’s pre-game fireworks had barely cleared when Quinones struck in the 9th minute, firing low through captain Ronwen Williams’ legs to put the hosts ahead.
A massive roar erupted from Estadio Azteca, the only stadium to host matches at three World Cups. South Africa coach Hugo Broos had warned about the 80,824-strong crowd, but his side looked rattled early as every Mexican pass was cheered with “Ole!”.
Sithole looked rattled too, losing possession for Quinones’ opener. His nightmare continued in the 49th minute when he pulled down Brian Gutierrez clean through on goal and got sent off.
Mexico doubled their lead in the 67th minute after a slick counterattack, Roberto Alvarado crossed for Wolves striker Raul Jimenez to head home at the back post.
South Africa’s misery continued in the 84th minute when Zwane saw red after VAR spotted him catching Alvarado with a raised arm.
There was late drama too ,Mexico’s Cesar Montes was sent off for a clumsy foul on Khuliso Mudau right on the edge of the box.
