COVID-19: Plane Carrying Evacuated Nigerians From Dubai Makes U-turn

A plane carrying Nigerians evacuated from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has made a turnaround after a pregnant woman went into labour.

The chartered Emirates flight returned to Dubai, where it departed from, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), confirmed to Channels Television.

The plane, which was scheduled to land at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at 3pm, is now expected to arrive at 7pm.

The Emirates flight is expected to be the first of at least two other flights scheduled to evacuate Nigerians within the next few days.

Speaking on Monday at the press briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Foreign Affairs, disclosed that over 4,000 Nigerians are waiting to be evacuated across the world back home.

According to Onyeama, discussions are ongoing with British Airways to airlift 300 Nigerians from London on Friday, while arrangements are also being made with Ethiopian airlines for a flight from New York to Abuja next Monday.

The returning Nigerians are expected to be quarantined for 14 days in select hotels on their arrival, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday.
